Fighting HIV/AIDS: The EPIC Project Launched in Maroua
On Thursday, March 5, 2026, the Épic (Epidemiological Surveillance) project was launched in Maroua under the auspices of the Governor of the Far North Region. This initiative, implemented by the NGO FHI 360 in partnership with the Ministry of Public Health, aims to support Cameroon’s efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
The Coordinator of the Far North Regional Technical Group (RTG) on AIDS, Dr. GANAVA Maurice, presented the HIV situation in the region. According to the data, the national HIV prevalence rate dropped from 5.4% in 2004 to 2.7% in 2018.
The Épic project aims to strengthen prevention, improve community-based testing, and optimize care for people living with HIV. It plans to improve testing strategies, strengthen the collection and analysis of health data, and support medical teams.
Through this project, health authorities hope to reduce new infections and improve the quality of life for people living with HIV in the Far North region. The project specifically targets women, young people, and hard-to-reach populations.
The launch ceremony brought together administrative and traditional authorities, as well as health sector officials.
